MAHA disrupts the CDC in order to install a Silicon Valley pseudoscientist

As We Said, Tech ≠ Science!

Sadly, it’s a dire continuation of what our book and this past week’s podcast both explore — the disruption of science by a tech-first mindset.

In this case, it’s the CDC being disrupted by a creature of the Internet (RFK, Jr.). Scientists have been sidelined for the sake of a Silicon Valley player with ties to Peter Thiel and anti-aging biotechs (Jim O’Neill).

The notion that science is technology is clear in the coverage, as the New York Times put it:

Mr. Kennedy, for his part, previously praised Mr. O’Neill’s unusual background, noting that his Silicon Valley and government experience made him “ideally suited” to turn the Department of Health and Human Services into “a technological innovation powerhouse.”

We’ll have more coverage next week, but the theme — treating science like it’s technology and is best managed by technology concepts — is dominating both science and scientific publishing in damaging, debilitating ways.

Tech ≠ science. Here’s our podcast again in case you missed it.
