Interview — Jason Steinhauer

The author of “History, Disrupted” discusses how modern media changes things

Interview — Jason Steinhauer

Jason Steinhauer is a “public historian” working at the intersection of history, tech, media and politics. He writes and speaks about how social media, tech, and A.I. are shaping our history, politics, democracy, and future.

His 2021 book, History, Disrupted: How Social Media and the World Wide Web Have Changed the Past, caught our eye after our book was completed, and it was heartening to see him hit on some of the same ideas and concerns but in the field of history. It reminds us that our challenges are shared.

Jason also has a newsletter that is making a splash.

In this interview, Jason discusses a number of relevant issues around the effects and incentives of the current media space and how those have made it harder for professional information to gain traction while enabling a number of bad actors — purposely or accidentally — to gain the upper hand.

We also have two food-related “Discoveries of the Week.”
