IOP’s AI-Peer Review Survey

Portrayed as revealing “polarized” views, maybe it’s just a shoddy survey?

IOP Publishing didn’t put the date on its recent description of a survey about peer review and AI. In things related to AI, where comprehension about what AI represents and sentiment about how well AI works are headed in opposite directions — the more people understand it, the less they think of it — dates matter.

Fortunately, IOP’s effort to goose awareness of the results caused them to generate a press release disguised as coverage, and this has the date — September 15, 2025.

In both instances, IOP seems to want to continue to promote the idea of a “polarized” opinion having emerged about AI adoption in peer-review.

But there’s a problem with this — their survey has too many limitations to be a reliable view into the academic review system:
