Song: “Lachryma”
Another Ghost song, another magical mash-up of '80s synths, heavy metal, and sparkling pop
Imagine if you mashed up KISS, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Anne Rice, the Thompson Twins, and Wes Craven into a musical act . . .
You’d get something very similar to Ghost, whose new song “Lachryma” off their upcoming album Skeleta is taking the Internet by storm.
Ghost specializes in mixing 1980s pop with dark metal in ways that satisfy multiple musical itches — for grinding riffs, catchy hooks, and sparkling solos and synths. It’s a space the band has more or less made their own — adding lots of extravagant spooky stuff to make it all even more tongue-in-cheek and delightfully cheesy.
That said, there’s a lot to admire here, including founder and lead singer Tobias Forge’s vocal flip in the pre-chorus, the amazing musicianship of the ghouls, and the overall effect of the video, which is — like other videos — like a horror movie with a dose of Scoobie Doo thrown in to make it clear it’s not seriously meant to scare anyone.
Ghost is kicking off it’s world tour soon. It’s their “Skeletour.” I’ll be seeing them in July. Should be a unique kind of fun.
Enjoy!
