This Week: “Science ≠ Tech”
First Github, now AI, we let technology dominate our approach to discovery
A sage post by Jessica Knurick, a hotshot public health expert and educator, frames this week’s episode where we explore why embracing tech actually obscures science, seducing us into thinking science is a thing rather than an activity and process.
Science is a process of discovery that has derivatives. Tech is one set of derivatives. That’s a fundamental if underappreciated and undefended difference.
The difficulties our misalignment with scientific culture and expectations are manifest in many ways, and the accidental credentialing by technology implementations dressed up as branded solutions or endorsements is another element we consider.
We also discuss new ways AI is trying to interpose itself, creating what one company calls pretentiously, “A business model for The AI age.” Yes, that is how they capitalize it . . . you may weep when ready.
Also, the dumb new NIH policies and more — all related to tech ≠ science.
We end with our newest “Discoveries of the Week.” Both are happy things.
