Song: “Goody Two Shoes”

When the tabloids need dirt, clean living can be bad enough

Stuart Goddard — better known at Adam Ant — had the first single from his first solo album (Friend or Foe) become a massive hit in the UK (#1) and the US (#12). Mocking the British tabloids’ obsession with his clean lifestyle, it featured these great lyrics:

Don’t drink, don’t smoke, what do you do?
Subtle innuendos follow
There must be something inside.

The video ends with Ant taking a woman home, answering the inherent question.

Ant was already a sensation in the UK by the time this 1982 solo single exploded. His band — Adam and the Ants — started in 1977. By 1980, the UK was experiencing “Antmania,” which put the band at the forefront of the New Romantic movement. The single “Antmusic” went to No. 2 on the UK singles chart by December 1980.

Ant has been making music ever since, and had a moderately successful acting career. With a history of dealing with mental health issues himself, Ant is involved in the Black Dog campaign, which promotes better understanding of mental illness.

Enjoy!
