Article Processing Charges (APCs) are becoming the new cash cows for publishers. Funding agencies and universities are pouring in money. While the publishers might claim that APCs dont affect the chances of acceptance, a model where publisher directly benefits by accepting the paper is highly questionable. In some sense this model is incentivising journals to accept more papers as it increases their revenue (without much additional costs). The open access model is incredibly stupid and the reason why scientific pollution is on the rise. Which publisher will say no to more money? They are for-profit organisations after all, who care about the bottomline. Science be damned.
